Why Removed Exam Questions Can Reappear for Specific Users

In some situations, a question that has been deleted from an exam may still appear to certain learners. This article explains why this occurs and what to expect.

Scenario

You delete a question from an exam using the Edit Questions page. Later, a learner reports that the deleted question still appears when they resume their exam attempt.

Why this happens

When a learner begins an exam and skips a question, the system saves their progress. If the learner selects Resume at a later time, the platform restores the exam exactly as it existed during their last saved attempt.

This includes any questions that were present at the time the learner started the attempt, even if those questions were later deleted by the exam author.

This behavior ensures that learners can complete their exam attempt without disruption and preserves the consistency of the in-progress session.

Who is affected

The following learners may see the deleted question:

  • Learners who started the exam before the question was deleted and are resuming their attempt

The following learners do not see the deleted question:

  • Learners who begin a new attempt after the question has been deleted

Summary

This is expected system behavior. Deleted questions are removed from all new exam attempts. However, they remain visible to learners who resume an attempt that began before the deletion. This protects the integrity and continuity of in-progress exams.
