Course Access Blocked by Prerequisite Steps in a Learning Path

Scenario

A user sees a padlock icon on a course they need to access with the message:

“Complete the prerequisites for this course.”

Explanation

The course is locked because it is part of a Learning Path with a mandatory sequence enabled.

This is expected system behavior. Mandatory sequencing ensures learners complete courses in the defined order to support a structured learning experience.

What’s happening

The user attempts to launch a course but cannot access it because the padlock icon appears.

Why the course is locked

The course belongs to a Learning Path configured with the sequence set to Mandatory.

When a Learning Path uses a mandatory sequence:

  • Learners must complete earlier steps before accessing later courses.

  • The system treats preceding steps as prerequisites.

If the course is included in multiple Learning Paths and at least one uses a mandatory sequence, the course remains locked until the required preceding steps in that mandatory path are completed.

This restriction applies even if the learner tries to access the course from:

  • A different Learning Path

  • A standalone course listing

Resolution

To unlock the course, use one of the following options.

Option 1: Complete the prerequisite steps

Have the user:

  1. Navigate to the Learning Path enforcing the mandatory sequence.

  2. Complete all preceding courses in the path.

Once completed, the locked course becomes available across all Learning Paths and contexts.

Option 2: Update the sequence setting

If appropriate, modify the Learning Path settings:

  1. Locate the Learning Path.

  2. Change the sequence from Mandatory to Suggested.

After updating the sequence, learners can access the course without completing previous steps.
