External Web Links in Courses

Scenario

You created training content on an external website and imported it into a course using Import from Web, but the page does not display inside the course. Instead, you see a message indicating the platform cannot connect to the page.

Explanation

This behavior is expected for certain websites.

Some external sites use security settings that prevent their pages from being embedded within another website (for example, inside an iframe within a course step). When this occurs, the page cannot load inside the course.

To resolve this, configure the lecture to open the link in a new browser tab.

Resolution

Enable the Open in New Tab option for the affected lecture.

Navigation: UKG Learning > Academy Workspace > Academy Admin > Training Admin > Courses

  1. Select the course that contains the web-imported lecture.

  2. In the Course Panel, open the Lectures tab and select Lectures.

  3. Locate the lecture that includes the imported web content.

  4. Select the checkbox labeled Open in New Tab.

Once enabled, learners can open the external content in a separate browser tab without connection errors.

Tracking considerations

When Open in New Tab is enabled, the platform cannot track time spent on the external page because it opens outside the course environment.

As a result:

  • Duration-based engagement metrics from that page are not recorded.

If this tracking limitation aligns with your training requirements, this method provides a simple and effective way to include live external content in your courses.
