Prerequisite Courses and Certificate Expiration

Scenario

You configured Course A as a prerequisite for Course B.

Course B is set to automatically reassign every 12 months based on its certificate expiration settings.

You want to know:

Is Course A also automatically reassigned when Course B expires?

Explanation

Prerequisite courses are not automatically reassigned when a related course is reassigned due to certificate expiration.

Each course is governed only by its own certificate expiration settings.

How reassignment works

Prerequisites are independent. When a course is automatically reassigned because its certificate expires:

  • The system reassigns only that course

  • Prerequisite courses are not included in the reassignment

Course-specific expiration settings apply. A prerequisite course is reassigned only if it has its own certificate expiration configured.

For example:

  • Course A is the prerequisite and does not have certificate expiration enabled

  • Course B expires and is automatically reassigned

In this case, learners remain marked as completed for Course A, even after Course B is reassigned.

How to align renewal schedules

If you want both Course A and Course B to expire and renew on the same schedule (for example, annually), configure certificate expiration settings for each course individually.

Setting expiration on both courses ensures the entire training sequence renews as intended.

Important:
If both the primary course and its prerequisite are reassigned based on their individual certificate expiration settings:

  • The prerequisite will no longer be marked as completed

  • Learners must complete the prerequisite again before accessing the primary course

This behavior is expected and ensures the prerequisite requirement is enforced each time the courses renew.
